Former Samajwadi Party leader and sitting Rajya Sabha MP Amar Singh passed away today in Singapore. He was 64 and had been hospitalised for a long time. Amar Singh was born on January 27, 1956, in Aligarh district of Uttar Pradesh. He was an alumnus of St. Xavier’s College and University College of Law, Kolkata, from where he earned his LLB.
Amar Singh, who had a kidney transplant in the Singapore hospital more than a decade back, continued to face health issues and was again admitted to the hospital earlier this year.
From his hospital bed on March 2, Singh denied rumours that suggested he had died. He posted a 2-minute long video to clarify his health status and stressed that he was fighting back. “Tiger Zinda Hai,” he wrote in his short message.
He also posted a short video message on March 22 from the hospital bed, appealing to all his supporters to back Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the fight against coronavirus.
Amar Singh was the general secretary of the Samajwadi Party and a member of the Rajya Sabha. On January 2010, he resigned from all the posts of the Samajwadi Party and was later expelled by chief Mulayam Singh Yadav on February 2, 2010. He spent a brief period in judicial custody in 2011, and finally retired from politics. In 2016, he was elected to the Rajya Sabha with support from Samajwadi Party. He was reinstated as one of the general secretaries of the party in October 2016.
