UN chief Antonio Guterres has strongly condemned the attack on Afghanistan’s hospital, which killed at least 14 people, including two newborns. He said that such crimes are unacceptable and the perpetrators of such incidents should be held accountable.

Grenades and gun-armed terrorists entered the police uniform and carried out the attack in the maternity centre of the hospital. The centre is run by the international body Doctors Without Borders under humanitarian aid.

In a separate attack the same day, a suicide bomber targeted a funeral program in the country’s Nangarhar province, a group of Islamic State groups that killed at least 24 people and injured 68. The terrorist carried out the attack when several people joined the funeral of a senior police officer.

A statement issued by a spokesman for the UN chief said that the Secretary-General strongly condemned the horrific attack on the hospital in Kabul. Which killed and injured dozens of people, including women and children. Guterres expressed his deepest condolences to the families of the victims and the government and people of Afghanistan.

He reiterated that attacks against civilians are unacceptable and that hospitals, medical facilities and personnel enjoy special protection under international humanitarian law. Those who committed such crimes should be held accountable.

The United Nations stands in solidarity with the Afghan people and government and is committed to supporting the Afghan-led peace process that ended the conflict. The (UNAMA) has expressed sorrow over the attacks.

The UN humanitarian coordinator in the country, Toby Lanzer, expressed displeasure over the attack on the hospital, saying that the 100-bed facility hospital was filled with patients and medical staff at the time of the attack.

He said in a statement that it is beyond imagination that such a heinous act could be carried out in the midst of the coronavirus epidemic in Afghanistan. According to Johns Hopkins University data, about 5,000 people have infected with the coronavirus in the country, while more than 125 people have died.
