Iran congratulates Iraq on electing new president

Iran congratulates the nation of Iraq on the election of a new president of Parliament and reaffirms its support for democracy and the sovereignty of this Arab neighbor.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran has always supported the democracy, territorial integrity and sovereignty of Iraq and supports the decisions taken by the elected representatives of the Iraqi people,” Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qasemi underlined on Saturday.

The Persian diplomat has added that the election of the new president of Parliament is an “important and necessary” step to establish a new government in the Arab country.

The Sunni lawmaker Mohamed al-Halbusi has been elected this same day  new head of the Iraqi Parliament thanks to 167 votes in favor of the 251 votes collected. 

Thus, four months after the elections, the first step is taken for the establishment of a new Executive.
