I have found a list of Really Cool Animals and Pets that do not create trouble. It is always a good idea to consult a specialist, of course.
Here are some ideas:
9. Hermit crab.
We start with an exotic one. Although it sounds strange, these crustaceans can survive very well in a terrarium and only need water and a little food. They are more animated than we could assume and have the interesting habit of changing carapace when they grow up.
Some become too big to grow, but there are breeds of lizards and geckos that behave very well and require little care. Although babies are very delicate, if they manage to grow a little they will be resistant and active pets for a long time.
7. Small birds
If the children are calm, they can take care of a small bird (like a canary) perfectly. With changing the water, the food and cleaning the cage from time to time is enough. Important to keep in mind the sound that the bird makes: the canaries are nice but they sing a lot. On the other hand, a parakeet is quieter, but when it screams it can be annoying.
6. Small rodents
A hamster, a gerbil … They are cute and sociable and require care similar to the previous examples. A part of a wheel to exercise, it is important to have them monitored if they are out of their box because they love getting through small holes.
5. Guinea Pig
Unlike the previous rodents, their size will allow us to leave them free without fear of escaping or hiding forever. They are a good intermediate step, before acquiring a bigger pet (like a dog or a cat), since the hair requires some care and cleaning.
4. Beta fish
Beta a type of fish that lives better in simple installations. They do not require a huge aquarium or filtration of water, cleaning the fish tank and changing the water from time to time is enough. They can be combined with a water snail and there are many different colors. Important: Buy only one. Two in the same tank will fight to the death.
3. An adult dog
Taking the step towards a dog is no-nonsense. Although the puppies are more tempting because they are cute, an adult dog will respect the children more and will require less care. Also, if you are going to look for a shelter, you will be doing something good and giving an example to your children.
2. An ant colony
They were fashionable in the 50s, but they are still a spectacle of nature. Ready-made facilities are sold so everyone in the house can see how an ant society is organized and built. Perhaps they are too delicate for very young children, but with a little supervision and teaching them to respect their environment, it is a very interesting option.
1. Small snakes
Do not be scared yet! There are small and, of course, non-poisonous snakes, that can get used to the life of a family perfectly. You will have to consult a specialist which suits you best, and prepare a terrarium without fissures so that it does not leave accidentally. Of course, they are carnivorous, so they would not be a good combination with the hamsters a few points above.
Which convinces you more?
